We are still looking at storm windows after receiving yet another quote. This time we spoke with local carpenters and the quote was very reasonable, several hundred less than our first quote and included two interior storms for the sleeping porch.
Drew and I are now deciding whether we want the full classic storms on all the windows or if we still want to go with the tricked out Marvin storms with built-in screens on a few of the upper story side windows and Indow Windows on the sleeping porch.
During every project we come to this point - where historic accuracy bumps up against convenience. Our general rule of thumb is that if something is a permanent part of the house, we try to be as historic as possible. In this case, the storms are easily removed or changed, so we can view them as accessories rather than permanent fixtures, so it will come down to our personal preferences and aesthetics.
I'm leaning toward convenience, Drew's leaning toward the aesthetic appeal of the original style, so this may take a few rounds of rocks, paper, scissors before we get to building.
