Historic buildings and Cascadia event

At the same time I have been working in historic preservation projects I have had a parallel interest in preparing for the Cascadia earthquake and tsunami.  While thus isn't a topic that is much discussed in the historic preservation community, it should be. The National Trust did a good job mobilizing to save historic structures after Katrina, but this type of work needs to be prepared ahead of time to be really effective. First, a brief introduction to the Cascadia event. It will be a…See More

Howard Glazer and the Day Building

Howard Glazer, who was an important architectural voice in Portland for over 50 years, passed away in September. His office was in the Day Building on NW Flanders and 21st street, a WL Morgan apartment building that he bought, restored, and placed on the National Historic Register in the 1970's. This summer, while he was battling cancer, the Day Building had a fire which burned the roof and 3rd floor and damaged other parts of the building as well. The building is being restored (with the help…See More

The Go Green 10 Conference was last week and I was on the panel for the "Oregon State Communities: Economic Development Strategies Around Sustainability" breakout session. I presented Columbia Pacific Preservation's efforts at creating an economic cluster based on historic preservation and also Clatsop Community College's Historic Preservation Program, which is part of that effort. This and a discussion of 20 minute neighborhoods were the only mention of historic preservation as part of… Continue

Cascadia and Historic Preservation

I am learning my way around the HPLO website. I have started a discussion about the impact the Cascadia earthquake/tsunami will have on historic preservation efforts and wanted to let people know of the series of entries I have put there. I welcome some feedback.

Jay, I am looking for a project that has not necessarily been completed and might be on an "endangered building" list. Since White Stag has been done and is LEED certified, we would prefer not to use it. On the other hand, it should be something where the information that I asked for is pretty easily available. We have one strong possibility so far. Thanks for the information.
